How Gaming And One Year Of Twitch Streaming Helped Me

I have been an avid gamer since I was a kid and gaming has helped my mental health a great deal. I live with depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can be such a rough thing for me and there are days when grey days are really bad. It can be difficult to remember the negative voices lie all the time and while I have gotten better about that, it's still something I am working on every day. One of the big things that has helped me with a bad grey day is gaming. Being able to enjoy a favorite game helps me to distract my mind from those negative thoughts and just have a break from stressing myself out.

When I first decided to stream on Twitch a year ago it was to challenge myself to try something new and do something that scared me. For those who know me really well they will tell you I am a very quiet and shy person especially when I'm meeting new people. I don't really talk much and I observe until I feel comfortable. The idea of streaming and talking on a mic scared me, but I challenged myself to do it. Everyone starts somewhere and the first night I streamed I streamed directly from my PS4 and I did not talk on the mic. The first game I ever streamed was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age. I typed in chat with people while playing the game. It was definitely an interesting first night, but I did it. The second night I tried talking on a mic. Looking back, my voice was a little shaky and quiet. I was so nervous! What matters however, is I did it and as I kept talking I started to relax and became a bit more comfortable because everyone in my chat was so kind and encouraging. I found that the more I streamed, the easier it got and I figured out a schedule that worked for me and found my rhythm with my streams. I am still not ready to be in a front of a camera while streaming, but talking on the mic works for me and our community is very kind and understanding about it.

I love story driven and indie games such as Wandersong. There's just something about a good story and gameplay that I love. Wandersong was a favorite for me because not only was it a good story game it was also fun to play and it had some thoughtful insights about the meaning of friendship and reaching out to people who need kindness. This showed me what I wanted for our community. I started speaking openly and honestly about my own mental health to show others that it's okay to not be okay, it's alright to talk about it, and that there is no shame in seeking help from a licensed therapist. I continue to advocate for open and honest conversation about mental health and seeking help when we need it because our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

Wandersong was one of my favorite games to stream.

I always make it perfectly clear that I'm not an expert and point out the importance of getting professional help from a licensed therapist. I get a lot of young people telling me how scared they are of therapy and I do everything I can to talk to them kindly and gently about it explaining how it works. I use my experience with therapy as an example because it has helped me a lot and continues to help me. Our community does our best to be kind, welcoming, and supportive of everyone. Everyone is welcome and we have a lot of important conversations about mental health and gentle reminders that it's okay to take time for ourselves and take care of our mental health. Sometimes with some of the games I play for streams, there are moments or situations in the game that bring up some of these topics organically. For example, the Shane personal story arc in Stardew Valley. There is a scene with Shane that addresses his depression and it is in a word intense. Shane has a crisis moment with his depression and the main character in Stardew Valley does her/his best to help Shane. It's a powerful scene in the game and we had a conversation about it in our community about what it means to need help and why sometimes it's hard to ask for help. Stardew Valley helped us to talk honestly about mental health and learn some things too.

Stardew Valley offers more than farming, it offers important lessons about mental health also.

Being able to play games and talk to people about mental health openly and honestly has helped me a great deal. It's helped me to make new friends, to come out of my shell a bit, and to be kind to others the way so many were kind to me when I needed someone to talk to or just needed some help. One of the best friendships I made was with m friend and fellow streamer tifad0esart. Tifa is an insanely talented artist and I always love watching her art streams. Not only that, she does emote art commissions. She is my go to emote artist always because of the incredible work she does. Tifa does a fantastic job of sketching out exactly what I want and communicates with me about every detail until it's done. So many people love the emotes she's done for my stream channel which makes me very happy because Tifa deserves that recognition. If you're looking for an emote artist hit her up on twitter. She's fantastic!

Amazing emotes done by tifad0esart

As my year progressed, streaming got easier. I slowly did upgrades. I tried remote play for streaming. That was an adventure in itself. Remote play for PS4 and streaming is not always reliable and that's putting it lightly. I did my best to make it work, but sometimes there were so many technical issues it drove me up the wall. My husband Ron has been my biggest supporter and he's my tech guy. Ron is the one who is at my side for every moment and he is the one who helps me test things to see what works, what doesn't, or what needs to be fixed. Ron did everything to set up his streaming PC for me so I could use the capture card and go from there. It was definitely a vast difference. There are still tech issues sometimes, but that is rare. Ron has always cheered me on, assured me that I'm doing fine when I have a grey day, and always lets me know that I am loved. Sometimes he hangs out with me for streams and chats with everyone sometimes offering sage advice and kind words. There's a reason everyone in our community calls him Stream Dad. Ron was there for my one year anniversary on Twitch which was on September 7, and it was amazing.

Celebrating 1 year on Twitch with Ron.

Gaming and streaming for one year on Twitch has helped me to not be afraid to be myself, to talk openly and honestly about my own health and encouraging others to be able to talk about their own mental health journey without fear. Everyone in our community has helped to build a place that is kind, supportive, and understanding. I'm grateful to everyone who has been there for me through all of it. I am also grateful to my friends and fellow streamers who encouraged me with their kind words and support. It's hard to believe that it's been one year on Twitch and I'm looking forward to many more. To everyone in our community, thank you for the love, support, and kindness. Remember to be kind to yourselves and to each other. Love you all!

Thank you for an amazing year! Here's to many more!

The Adventures Of Pirotess: So You Want To Be A Dancer

With the Shadowbringers expansion in Final Fantasy XIV one of the jobs you can unlock is Dancer. Those of us who played Final Fantasy XI remember the Dancer job class pretty well. I was excited to get it unlocked and try it out. Want to get Dancer unlocked yourself? Here's how. First, you will need to have a disciple of war job class to at least level 60 since Dancer starts at level 60. Next, head to Limsa Lominsa lower decks and talk to the NPC called Eager Lominsan which will start the quest, Shall We Dance.

Talk to Eager Lominsan and start the Shall We Dance quest.

Shall We Dance gives you an introduction to the Dancer job class. You get a great cutscene with it and you can see how it looks. After the cutscene you receive all the equipment you need for Dancer. Make sure you talk to the NPC again to get your next Dancer quest, Gamboling For Gil.

Pirotess gets her Dancer equipment.

You will need to travel to Costa del Sol and talk to the NPC Nashmeira for the Gamboling for Gil quest. This gives you a chance to use your Dancer skills. You need to perform specific moves in order to finish the quest. It's a good introduction to the job class and figuring out what each skill does.

Pirotess shows off her dancing skills.

Dancer is a lot of fun and I am enjoying leveling it. Dancer has a lot of great combat skills as well as support skills for party members. It's interesting and adds a unique style to the world of Final Fantasy XIV. Get out there and get dancing! Thanks for reading, see you at the next adventure!

See you at the next adventure!

The Adventures Of Pirotess: Celebrating Moonfire Faire 2019

The Moonfire Faire is back in Final Fantasy XIV. This is a fun seasonal event because it really captures the fun spirit of Summer with hanging out on the beach, eating delicious food, and having a good time with your friends. To start the event, you need to be at least level 30 and you will need to go to Limsa Lominsa's Upper Decks and talk to the NPC Mayaru Moyaru which gives you the Feels Like Moonfire quest. Head to Costa del Sol where the Moonfire Faire is held each year.

Head to Cost del Sol to start celebrating.

There are a couple of activities you can do at Moonfire. One is a jumping puzzle course a la Ninja Warrior which is decently challenging. It took me a couple of tries to get through this course, but it was a lot of fun trying it out. Don't worry if you fall in the water, you can go back to the beginning and try again. When you complete the course, you get tokens that you can exchange for prizes.

Pirotess and Mouse the chocobo check out the jumping course.

There is also a little side quest at the event called Anything You Can Do. It only takes a few minutes to do and you get to see a cute story at the event and when you complete it you get the white Moonfire happi set.

Do this quest and get the white Moonfire happi set as a reward.

If you're not into jumping hijinks, don't worry. You can try your culinarian skills instead. Talk to the NPC Hildelana to get the Frying for Fame and Fortune quest. Having culinarian unlocked and at least level 5 is a good advantage because you will need to make the battered fish recipe. If you have fisherman unlocked this is good too. You can get the haddock you need by either fishing for it and getting the Hook, Line, and Sinker fishing quest done or you can buy some haddock from the fishing vendor.

Unlock this quest to get cooking at the Faire.

The nice thing about the cooking quest is that it is repeatable so you can turn in as many battered fish as you want during this ongoing event in order to get tokens that you turn in to the NPC vendor for various prizes. There are a lot of great prizes this year ranging from Moogle masks to a portable pool.

Trade tokens in for a variety of great rewards.

The Moonfire Faire is a lot of fun each year and it's a nice break from the leveling grind and adventuring. The event is running until August 26. Get out there, celebrate, and have fun! See you at the next adventure!

Pirotess enjoys the Moonfire Faire fireworks. See you at the next adventure!

Dragon Quest Builders 2: Bigger, Better Building Fun

I enjoyed the first Dragon Quest Builders game so I was excited to play Dragon Quest Builders 2. The story for Dragon Quest Builders 2 is set after the events of Dragon Quest 2. It focuses on a group known as The Children Of Hargon who are seeking revenge on the children of Erdrick for the defeat of Hargon and Malroth. The way they do this is by forbidding building or creating anything and by eliminating builders completely. You can play as a male or female builder and are captured by The Children of Hargon on a ship. This is where the game introduces some of the tutorial basics for the game. It's a fun way to introduce you to how building works in the game. The item menu and controls are easy to navigate as you cycle through which items you need. You can break things down to gather building materials the way you would in games like Minecraft and use them to build. Eventually your builder escapes and ends up on the Isle Of Awakening where they meet a person named Malroth who has no memories of his past or who he was. He joins your builder and helps them to build, battle monsters, and improve their building powers.

This is where Dragon Quest Builders 2 really shines. It showed how much they improved upon the issues with the first game. The first area you arrive at introduces you to a group of farmers and starts you on your building journey. Here you learn about growing crops, creating even better buildings, and do several quests for the people. It feels less lonely because your builder has actual help. If your base is destroyed by monsters, the villagers will actually rebuild it for you. They will plow the fields and water the crops you plant. If you add building materials to a chest, the villagers will use those materials to build. You will also get requests for specific room builds such as a kitchen or a private bedroom. This gives you a lot of creative freedom in your building deciding what type of materials you want to use to build the walls as well as crafting the items needed to place in the rooms. It's easy to lose track of time as you run around gathering materials, build rooms, craft items, and complete quests as part of the story.

Taking the time to appreciate building a great field of crops.

The combat is no longer frustrating and tedious. Instead, it's a lot of fun and you notice how much it's improved from the first game. Having Malroth with you definitely helps because he helps your builder unlock better skills for getting materials for your builds. You also unlock combo attacks that you can do with Malroth while fighting enemies. Battles are a lot of fun and you can craft weapons for yourself, Malroth, and some of the villagers. They will fight monsters alongside you and I was having such a good time with it, I didn't even notice the level grind. The art design and music for the game is great and I found myself stopping just to look at the surrounding area and see all the types of monsters there are in the game.

Battling monsters is fun!

One of the big things I appreciated in the game is fast travel. In certain spots you touch an item called a naviglobe and from then you can warp to that area. You can always warp back to your home base which is convenient because it means you don't have to run all those long distances. This is easily done via your map menu. It's easy to open and you can just scroll to where you need to go and click on the footprints icon on the map. I enjoyed exploring the open world and finding different things I could use to add to my builds. As you gather new materials, this unlocks new recipes. Another thing that unlocks new recipes is leveling up your base of course. As it levels up, it draws more people to the town and you have even more people helping you build which is great.

Ah, the great convenience of fast travel.

The story in Dragon Quest Builders 2 is great. I found myself invested in the story and wanting to see what happened next. The characters are charming and there are a lot of moments with them that are endearing. Every time I told myself I would only play for a couple of hours, four hours would go by because that's how much fun I was having with the game. With things like being able to change my character's appearance and add accessories as well as unlocking new recipes to build, it's not surprising that I had a blast playing the game and that I'm still having a fantastic time playing it. Being able to build things on my own island is amazing. Having that freedom to explore and build to my heart's content is absolutely one of my favorite things about the game. There is a great co-op feature as well. You can play with up to three people so that you can fight monsters, gather materials, and build together. It adds to the fun of the game even more and it keeps me coming back to play. Even after the main story is done, there are still areas to explore and more building to be done. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is bigger, better building fun than the first and it is a delight to play.

Having fun living my best builder life!

The Joy Of My Time At Portia

I had never played My Time At Portia, but after seeing people stream it I was genuinely curious about it. I mentioned this to a friend of mine and they highly recommended the game to me stating that because I love Stardew Valley, they were sure I would love this game. I decided to get a copy of the game and check it out for myself for my own streams. Right from the start I was hooked in. The introduction to My Time At Portia is that long ago civilization as we know it was destroyed and humans came out from living underground to rebuild society.

This is where the character design comes in. You can play as a male or female character. There are a variety of options to choose from with your character's face and hair as well as being able to adjust the color and makeup to the way you want. I do wish there were a few more longer hair options, but that's a minor thing and you do have a lot of freedom to choose how your character looks.

Character creation offers a lot of choices.

Once the character creation is done, you are on a boat arriving to Portia. The gist of the story is you are a builder and you inherit your father's workshop in order to build and expand helping the town of Portia grow. This introduces you to a bit of a tutorial on your house and how to build things in your workshop via machines and items used for crafting. Building and crafting is a big part of Portia naturally as your character is a builder. I actually had fun figuring out which machines I needed to build and how much of each item I needed to make things. Having multiple machines to craft things is definitely a good idea.

Use machines to craft and build your way to a better Portia.

This is where logging and mining come in. You will need a lot of various types of wood, ore, stone, and other materials in order to craft and build things. It is not tedious at all. I actually found it pretty relaxing to just quietly go out gathering. You also get experience points for each action which is nice for leveling up your character. With mining you get to go into ancient ruins and use an item called a relic scanner. With this tool you can scan the area and dig up relics from the old world as well as data discs. The data discs are important because you can take them to the research center in Portia and the scientists there can study them and give you diagrams that allow you to build machines and technology from the old world. You can also use these data discs to put together old world relics that you find in your mining. It's very much like a bit of a treasure hunt and it's great to see what you can discover.

Dig for materials and use the relic scanner to find old world items in the ruins.

You do not have to just mine in the ancient ruins. There are some other ancient ruins that have monsters that you can battle. You can craft weapons to use for fighting the monsters in these ruins. It is a good idea to take food with you that has healing properties as well as healing items that you can get from the clinic. The ruins with monsters are like a dungeon crawler having a set amount of floors. For example, one area can have five floors and you fight all the monsters on the floor. When you get to the fifth floor you have to fight a boss in order to proceed to the next area. The monster ruins usually have four set areas with a certain number of floors and it will give you the levels your character should be in order to successfully complete the area. These battles are a fun distraction from crafting and you are rewarded with items for your character ranging from crafting materials to accessories to weapons.

Fighting monsters in dangerous ancient ruins is a blast!

Fishing is another part of My Time At Portia. Honestly, I like the fishing in Portia better than Stardew Valley. It's an easier mechanic to follow and you actually earn more money from selling fish in the game. You should also save some of the fish to donate to the research center and to gift to one of the resident animals in Portia, a fluffy pink cat named Pinky. Fishing is relaxing and a great way to make money. You can also use the fish to cook different recipes.

Chilling out with some fishing.

Of course you can't get anywhere without friends in Portia. One of the things I absolutely love about the game is that as a male or female character you can romance the available bachelors and bachelorettes. So if you want to romance someone like Arlo you can do that as a guy or a girl. You can also make friends with people. You have a social log that shows your relationship status with people. The people with hearts by their name are people you can romance and marry while the people with stars by their name you can have friendships with, but not romance them.

Your social links in the user menu show you where you stand.

In order to increase those relationships, you need to talk to people as well as giving them gifts they like or love. This is where the Portia wiki is your friend. You can look up different characters and see what items they prefer. My character romanced and married Arlo who loved roses and spicy food. You can also fulfill wishes for people when they tell you about something they would like to have. In Arlo's case it was an arm stretcher. When you give people gifts they like or love, you will see how many friendship points it accrued. You can also spar with people or play rock, paper, scissors and get friendship points that way also. Each person in Portia has their own interesting back story and as you get to know them better you get to learn more about them.

Give people gifts they love for increased romance or friendship.

When a person likes you or you're in a romance with them you can go on play dates or dates. There are several locations on the map where you can play a mini game such as lighting fireworks, playing on a seesaw, or doodling in the sand. This allows you to get to know the person more and increase those friendship points. I found I really liked getting to know all the different people and learning about them.

There are of course a variety of festivals throughout the seasons in Portia. These are so much fun as you celebrate with everyone in town. My two personal favorites are the fishing contest and the snowball battle. You can earn special badges from these events and trade them in for special items and furniture for your workshop. You also increase your friendship points with everyone in town by participating in these special events so it's a good idea to have fun and enjoy it. Once you get the camera you can run around and take photos with people you're friends with which is really cool.

The great thing about My Time At Portia is it gives you the freedom to explore at your leisure and allows you to take your time to just enjoy things at your own pace. While there are a few crafting missions that you have to finish in a certain amount of time, you have a lot of room to explore. Finishing certain story missions also unlocks more of the map for you giving you even more places to go. I love My Time At Portia because of the wonderful way it incorporates all these things, letting you experience the game at your own pace and it is a joy to play and I find I keep playing because it is so much fun.

Taking a photo with Arlo.

The Adventures Of Pirotess: Unlocking Blue Mage And Make It Rain Event

Many of us who enjoy Final Fantasy XIV are excited for the upcoming Shadowbringers expansion. The blue mage job class has been added. If you played Final Fantasy V, IX, X, and XI you will remember the blue mage job class. Blue mage is an interesting job class because it learns spells from specific enemies by having them use the spell on them in order to learn it. For blue mage in Final Fantasy XIV you start at level 1 and you can level the job to level 50 right now until the new expansion release.

In order to unlock the blue mage the following criteria has to have been met: you must have a mage or war job class that is at least level 50 and your 2.0 main scenario quests must be complete. You will need to travel to Limsa Lominsa and talk to the NPC near the main aetheryte to start the quest Out Of The Blue. This will have you traveling to Summerford to meet a self proclaimed blue mage named Martyn to see if his claims of having blue magic are true.

Pirotess meets the blue mage Martyn.

This is where you get introduced to how blue magic works. There is a cutscene where you have to fight a monster and learn your first blue mage spell. When you finish this part of the story Martyn gives you a full set of blue mage gear to use on your adventures.

Quest complete, here's your full set of blue mage gear!

Just like that blue mage is unlocked and you will get a brief explanation of how blue mage works and how you get spells. Specific enemies have spells that you need to learn. It can take a bit of time and patience as you wait for them to cast the spell you need, but once they do you learn the spell. There are 49 different spells to learn and you can have 24 spells enabled so you need to really think about which spells you want to have for your battles.

Blue magic tutorial explanation.

I did play on blue mage a bit and it is a lot of fun. Fighting the monsters in order to learn spells is challenging, but once you learn those spells, it is pretty rewarding. It is designed for solo play and is a pretty sturdy job class once you get the rest of those spells and get better gear. So get out there and have fun learning those spells!

Pirotess ready to learn more blue mage spells.

I had fun doing the Make It Rain event because it was a nice quick break from adventuring. To do  this quest I  needed to head to Ul'dah to the main area to talk to the Lalafell who is sad and worrying about not being able to achieve his dream of being Senor Sabotender at the Gold Saucer. Once I talked to him this started the quest, The Sabotender Shimmy.

Start of the Make It Rain event quest.

My adventure took me to the Gold Saucer to encourage the young man for his audition after he learned from the original Senor Sabotender how to move just like the real sabotenders in the game. There were conversation choices where I could offer encouragement to the young Lalafell as he auditioned.

The audition begins!

Once the audition was complete, I was able to talk to the Lalafell again and he was quite happy. The reward for finishing this quest was the Senor Sabotender emote and some tokens that can be used at the Gold Saucer with the various mini games. I had fun doing this event because it is whimsical and a short detour from every day level grinding. If you missed the event, don't be too sad because it will be back next year. Thanks for reading. See you at the next adventure!

Pirotess gets a new emote and some tokens. See you at the next adventure!

Mother Gamer Plays Beyond: Two Souls

I had never played Beyond: Two Souls and I got the game for free with my Playstation Plus subscription. I decided to check it out. Right from the start of the game, the story hooks you in with an introduction to a young woman (played by Ellen Page) sitting in a sheriff's office looking grim. This is where Beyond really begins. It's an intriguing way to start a story and I found myself wanting to know who this young woman was and how she got to this point.

A strong introduction to Beyond: Two Souls

As the story progresses, you learn that the young woman's name is Jodie and she has a psychic connection with an entity known as Aiden. Jodie can communicate and work with Aiden to use telepathic abilities such as moving objects or possessing people's minds. This is where the game has time jumps between Jodie's childhood, her teen years, and adulthood. It seems the story does this on purpose, showing that memories in Jodie's mind are jumbled so there are frequent time jumps back and forth. It can be a little confusing at times, but it seems to meld well with the story.

The memory time line skips around like this.

You can adjust the difficulty settings in the game from easy to normal depending on your play style which is nice. Since this was my first time playing the game, I went with the easy setting so I could get a feel for things and just enjoy the story. As the story switched back and forth in the timeline you get to see the things Jodie went through as a kid with Aiden and how she came to be with the lead scientist of the paranormal department, Nathan who is played by Willem Dafoe. Throughout Jodie's childhood, Nathan is a constant presence and a bit of a father figure to her as they run tests to see how strong Jodie's abilities are as well as testing her connection to Aiden. This is where the game introduces you to the controls and the quick action button events.

Jodie as a young child with Nathan. The game shows the controls here.

You can also switch views between Jodie and Aiden. There are many points in the game where Jodie relies on Aiden for certain parts of the story in order to move objects, possess people, or fight enemies. This is where the quick action controls come in. Honestly, I did not like the quick action controls because for me it detracted from the story immersion and often felt like a chore to do especially if I missed it the first time. There were times where it was vital that I not miss the quick action moment and it could be very frustrating when I did miss it.

Aiden's point of view to move objects.

The aspect of Jodie and Aiden learning and growing together as the story progresses is definitely interesting. There are great emotional moments in the story with Jodie as she is trying to navigate what it means to be herself while trying to adjust and separate herself from Aiden. You also get to see how her relationships change with people like Nathan as she grows. The time skips through the fifteen year span of Jodie's life fill in some of the gaps in the story, but there are times where it feels a bit muddled because in some aspects it takes away the player control and just takes you along for the ride. That is not necessarily a bad thing, because Ellen Page does a phenomenal job as Jodie and I found myself caring a lot about this character and wanting to protect her from all the people who were trying to control or manipulate her.

There are multiple endings to Beyond depending on choices you make as Jodie, but it doesn't always seem like there are a ton of choices because you are basically there to see Jodie's story unfold and see how she came to be where she is. The voice acting and motion capture of the game is incredible and everyone did a fantastic job telling this story. That's not to say Beyond isn't flawed. As I said before, I did not like the quick action event sequences. I felt this detracted from the story a bit. I also felt there were a couple of writing choices that could have been done better and in a more thoughtful manner such as a troubling scene in one of Jodie's teen years memories. I also felt the ending could have been stronger because it took an odd cliffhanger turn. That being said, I did enjoy Beyond: Two Souls because of the great casting and the story. Ellen Page as Jodie is the real deal bringing a great sincerity to the character that made me care genuinely about Jodie and wanting her to be okay. That is the sign of some good storytelling. Beyond is definitely worth playing through at least once to see the story unfold through Jodie's eyes.
